Modern Man in Search of Soul

If Myron Christian Macauley’s 1st solo exhibition is anything to go by, it is an indication that it certainly won’t be his last. Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the opening reception at MCM Collective Holiday Pop-up Gallery, 362 West Broadway, NYC (between Broome & Grand Ave). (Full address provided so that the NY readers can have no excuse but to be there!) See flier below for dates and times.

The exhibition which showcases prints from Myron Christian’s work aptly titled Modern Man in Search of Soul, is partly sponsored by the Leblon Cachaca branded beverage, who had their lovely ladies in the house making the most delicious mojitos and caipirinhas on the house! (that means free yummy drinks for those of you who need the break down!) http://www.lebloncachaca.com/verify.html

Below are some of the pictures you can see at the exhibition.

Along with the exhibition prints, there is a coffee table book which has over 200 AMAZING photographs, taken over nearly 8 years as this modern man (Myron Christian Macauley) journeyed in search of soul from Asia to Africa to South America and beyond.

On the book and in the book…

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and therefore trying to do the book justice would be like writing a thesis over 20,000 words deep, and even then, I still would not capture the essence, the truth, the poetry, the chemistry, the love, the labor of love, the sheer genius that is behind each image, so serene in its stillness yet so loud in its message. Bottom line, be sure to catch this exhibition and support this talent!!!!!

Retrace – The Story

Ger Duany was a child soldier in another lifetime. Now, at age 31, he lives and works in New York as a successful model (Boss Models) and actor (I Heart Huckabees). It has been almost 20 years since Ger last saw his parents and his siblings. This Christmas, Ger wants to return to Sudan to find his mother and vote for a stable South Sudan. Ger is not sure what to expect, if the country is plunged into war again, he does not know how he will save his family from it.

The Impact

“My family is my Nation”
Sudan is the largest country in Africa. In January 2011, Sudan will be voting for a referendum to split the country in two or to keep it as one. For a country that has been plagued by war for so long, it has been the struggle of the inhabitants to find ways to ensure a peaceful country.
Over the last 10 years, Ger has lost 2 brothers in the war. With the rising tension as a result of the referendum, Ger is not sure if his other brother, a soldier in the South Sudan army will make it out. Ger wants to see his family while he can. He wants to be a part of the change before it happens. Like many others who have left as a result of the war, the ones left behind have found it hard to accept and include Sudanese from the diaspora. If they are not seen to be a part of the change now, then few will be readily accepted back into the society after the referendum.
Ger believes that his vote will help bring about the much needed change and stability in his country. His vote is a vote for his family. His vote is a vote for a peaceful nation and his journey is for the unification of his family. his vote and his journey remind us of the resilience of the human spirit and are a testament of true love.

Fashion For A Cause

For fashion lovers worldwide, what seems perfectly reasonable to us may be completely unreasonable to others. Any shoenista will tell you that one can never have too many shoes… don’t hate on my 300 pairs just because you’re happy with your 10 and don’t understand why I need the extra 290. But let’s face it, fashion is as superficial as it is captivating. Bigger picture… there are those without clothes to wear or shoes to put on their feet. So it is always heartwarming when you can combine fashion with giving back. Next Friday will present such an opportunity when Street Children Alliance, www.iscainc.org hosts Fashion for Street Kids. The Fashion show will feature 3 local (to Nairobi) Fashion Designers; up and coming designer Babo Njuguini, Clara Githaiga of Mrembo Online, and Wambui Kibue of Angelsmile. The event will be at the New Muthaiga Shopping Mall on Thigiri Close on Dec 18th, from 7pm – midnight. Tickets are KShs. 400 in advance and KShs. 500 at the door. A percentage of the proceeds from the ticket sales will go towards the Street Children Alliance education sponsorship program. Come one come all and enjoy a night of fun, fashion and giving. Hope to see you all there!  For additional information, please see the flier below {click twice on flier} or email sales@mremboonline.com {instead of .org per flier}
